Car Manufacturers A–Z: Every Major Car Brand and Who Owns It
An alphabetical list of car manufacturers and brands, from Abarth to Xpeng, with each brand’s home country, the year it was founded and who owns it today. We’ve included major brands sold in the US and worldwide, plus well-known brands that no longer build cars.
Brands in the same group often share engines, platforms and parts. That can make some repairs and parts cheaper and easier to find, especially for popular models.
Does the brand affect repair costs?
Yes, often a lot. Luxury and European brands tend to cost more to repair, because their parts are more expensive and their labor times are longer. Mainstream Japanese, Korean and American brands usually cost less. The same repair can easily cost twice as much on a luxury car as on an economy car. Our estimator adjusts for vehicle type so you can see the difference.
Peugeot is the oldest company on this list. It was founded in 1810 to make tools and household goods and built its first cars in the 1890s. Mercedes-Benz traces its roots to Karl Benz’s 1886 Patent-Motorwagen, often called the first true automobile.
Which company owns the most car brands?
Stellantis, formed in 2021 by merging Fiat Chrysler and PSA (Peugeot-Citroën), owns 14 well-known brands, including Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Peugeot, Fiat and Maserati.
Which car brands are American?
Current American brands include Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Jeep, Lincoln, Lucid, Ram, Rivian and Tesla. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram are owned by Stellantis, which is based in the Netherlands.
Which car brands no longer exist?
Well-known brands that have stopped making cars include Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn, Mercury, Plymouth, Saab, Scion, Packard, Studebaker and DeLorean. Many are still easy to service, because they shared parts with brands that are still in production.
This list covers 89 brands and is updated as ownership changes. Ownership reflects the main parent company as of 2026; some brands have minority shareholders not listed here.
